Ethnic Reconciliation and the Gift of Divine Love

Pursuing ethnic reconciliation is a hard thing. It is often discouraging and at times even seems hopeless. The truth is, I have no hope in human love accomplishing the work of bridge building or reconciliation. We lack the power of the love to accomplish such a task. The infection of racism and the virus of hate has infected the organs of our society too deeply for feeble Human love to have any true everlasting impact. Just look at the world. The best they can do to promote peace is to deny the very existence of color, in the people of color. For the world, the only hope for ethnic peace is to be colorblind. This is why I place zero hope in human love. The ethnic chasm that exists in the American church is too vast for human love to build a bridge to reconciliation. My Hope is in Divine Love. The Church does not operate out of human love. Every member of the church of Jesus Christ has the very Spirit of God dwelling within them. The Spirit of Love that has known love in perfection as He has fellowshipped with the Father and Son for all eternity. The Spirit of Love dwells within the hearts of every true believer. This is my great hope. My great hope is in the fact that the Church does not operate out of earthly love but rather out of divine love. Ethnic reconciliation requires an otherworldly love to conquer an otherworldly (demonic) hate. The church is the only source of such love. Bridges can be built because they are built not with man-made tools or out of earthly materials. Bridge building and reconciliation can happen because Jesus Christ is risen and his Spirit dwells within believers cultivating them into Jesus’ likeness. When discouragement comes, we must remind ourselves that Divine Love conquered doubt. When we feel alienated, we must remember that Divine Love purchased a church. When we feel like reconciliation is hopeless, we must remember that Divine Love will unite every tribe and tongue on the last day. Jesus won our salvation, and we have inherited his righteousness. The righteousness of Christ includes the Divine Love in which Christ walked in. This is why he was able to say in John 13:34-35,

“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.
By this, all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

This is why, as sure as we can say Jesus has risen from the dead we can say the church will be unified across ethnic lines. We can say this because ultimately His church operates out of Spirit wrought love. Our lives may be but a rock and flint in the cause of ethnic reconciliation but the sparks we make through Spirit empowered Love are guaranteed to be a blazing fire on the last day. May we not grow weary in doing good and in pursuing the unity the Spirit of God has remade us to walk in.
